Be Still My Soul

The timelessness of the message of Jesus--As my eyes followed and my mouth sang each line in the hymnal, layers were being peeled away. I saw Your love clearly through my blurry, teary eyes. I was moved to the point of sobbing.

With these lines, You pulled away at that lie that I'm going at it alone, that I cannot do it, that I should be choosing my own way:

Be still, my soul; the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul; thy best, thy heavenly, Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

With these lines, You reminded me of Your faithfulness through the years. You reminded me of how You care about the things in my life:

Be still, my soul; thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence, let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

I did not quite make it to this last verse as I sang this past Sunday; however, You remind me through the lyrics of this beautiful song that You have overcome and that the victory is won!

Be still, my soul; the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul; when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Be still my soul. Resist the urge to be the do-gooder who lets all these things get in the way of the greatest thing. Busyness and relevance in this world are the enemy's strongholds. Be still, my soul. Leave to thy God to order and provide. Amen
